Tom Felton is set to reprise his iconic role as Draco Malfoy in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Meanwhile, casting continues for the upcoming Harry Potter series, with new names joining the show based on J.K. Rowling’s books.
Rowling has faced criticism from fans and some actors associated with the franchise due to her controversial views on transgender issues. Felton, notably the only original film cast member returning for the Broadway adaptation, raised eyebrows with his decision to play Adult Draco, as many of his former co-stars have distanced themselves from the franchise due to their opposition to Rowling’s stance.
At the Tony Awards, Felton was asked whether Rowling’s views on gender influence his involvement in the Harry Potter universe. He responded, “No, I can’t say it does. I’m not really that attuned to it. The only thing I always remind myself is that I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world – here I am in New York – and I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter. And she’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.”
His remarks sparked mixed reactions. While Rowling’s supporters praised his loyalty, others expressed disappointment. One social media user commented, “Sorry, but he’s just a coward at this point. He said nearly the same thing five years ago (sic).” Another remarked, “Tom Felton really is the villain lol (sic).” Others criticized his stance, branding his response as “atrocious” and “disappointing.”
