Aamir Khan Confirms Scripting of Mahabharat Project to Begin Soon

Mumbai, September 20, 2025 — Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that his long-anticipated cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic Mahabharat is set to enter the scripting phase within the next two months. Describing the project as his “life’s most important” undertaking, Khan emphasized its spiritual and creative magnitude, calling it “not a film, but a yagna.”

In a recent appearance on the talk show Game Changers with Komal Nahta, Khan revealed that internal preparations for the project have already begun. “My work has already started from the inside,” he said, adding that the idea has been in development for over 25 to 30 years. He reiterated that the scripting process will be time-consuming but deeply meaningful, and expressed hope that production could begin later this year if all goes according to plan.

Khan also shared that Mahabharat will be produced as a multi-part saga, akin to the Lord of the Rings series, and may involve multiple directors. He clarified that casting will prioritize character authenticity over star power, stating, “I don’t plan to take any known faces in the film. For me, the characters are the stars”.

While Khan has not confirmed whether he will act in the project, he indicated that his role will be determined based on suitability during the casting process. The actor is expected to serve as producer and creative lead, overseeing the ambitious scale of the production.

The Mahabharat project has been a subject of speculation and anticipation for decades, with Khan previously hinting that it could be his final cinematic venture. “Maybe after doing this, I will call it a day,” he said in an earlier podcast interview.

In parallel, Khan has reportedly put his other project—a biopic on Dadasaheb Phalke—on hold, asking director Rajkumar Hirani to rework the script.

As fans await further developments, Khan’s renewed commitment to Mahabharat marks a significant moment in Indian cinema, promising a retelling of the epic with unprecedented scale and depth.
