Abhay Deol opened up about his childhood and growing up in a joint family with cousins Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol.
Abhay Deol is a member of Bollywood’s iconic Deol family, in which his uncle Dharmendra and cousins Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol were stars of their time.
On Screen’s Suvir Saran Show, the Socha Na Tha actor opened up about his childhood, growing up in a joint family with Sunny and Bobby, and how his family made conscious efforts to keep him away from the limelight.
Talking about his upbringing, Abhay said, “They tried to keep us away from glamour and limelight. They tried to give us as normal an upbringing as possible. I grew up in a joint family with Sunny and Bobby Deol.
Our parents tried to keep us away from the industry because they felt ‘one day you will come into the industry or not, but right now you are a kid, so we want you to have a normal childhood.’
He also recalled how he grew up in the same house with his two sisters and four cousins. Abhay recalled childhood memories with his cousins, saying that while they pampered him, they also maintained a distance. “I was the youngest.
So they pampered me, but they didn’t want to keep me around because I was a rowdy. They were closer to each other than me because I didn’t stay around them much, but they were closer to each other. My sisters are still very close to Sunny and Bobby,” he said.
When asked if he faced bullying in school because of his family’s fame, Abhay Deol said, “Everything was mixed in school. Some people would get impressed by the glamour and give you extra attention or there were some who would judge you for being famous and get angry at you for it.”
Despite coming from one of Bollywood’s most famous families, Abhay revealed that his parents have always been humble and down to earth.
“My parents are very simple. They came straight from the village to Bombay. I compare them to the Beverly Hillbillies – Bollywood Hillbillies. They are very proud of the community they come from and take pride in it,” he said.
