Academy Introduces Stunt Design Oscar; Rajamouli’s RRR Featured in Announcement

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has introduced a new Oscar category, Achievement in Stunt Design, which will debut at the 100th Oscars in 2028, honoring films released in 2027. This marks a historic recognition of the art and craft of stunt work, celebrating the creativity, innovation, and dedication of stunt performers and coordinators.

To announce this milestone, the Academy shared a poster featuring iconic stunt scenes from three films: RRR, Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Everything Everywhere All At Once. Among these, a fight scene from SS Rajamouli’s RRR—depicting Jr NTR flying towards a tiger—was highlighted. Rajamouli expressed his excitement and gratitude for this recognition, calling it a long-overdue acknowledgment of stunt work after a century of filmmaking.

Rajamouli thanked the stunt community, including David Leitch and Chris O’Hara, for their efforts in making this recognition possible. He also praised the Academy’s leadership for honoring the power of stunt work. The announcement has been met with enthusiasm from the stunt community and filmmakers worldwide, marking a significant step in celebrating the contributions of stunt professionals to the cinematic experience.

RRR, which previously made history by winning the Best Original Song Oscar for Naatu Naatu, continues to receive global acclaim for its breathtaking action sequences and storytelling. This new category is expected to further elevate the recognition of action choreography in films.
