Actor Deepika Padukone talks about her upbringing and her journey in the Hindi film industry. In a new interview, Deepika revealed that her ‘South Indian accent’ used to be frowned upon and that she thought it might get her dropped early in her career. Deepika also said that she would be given any award for bringing an alternative to mainstream Hindi cinema. At the time of the interview, she was credited for pioneering films that showed sensitivity towards emotional well-being and took women more seriously. The actor said he became an observer after being an outsider in the industry which helped him ‘change the status quo’.
Deepika made her acting debut in 2006 with the Kannada film Aishwarya. She made her Bollywood debut with Om Shanti Om (2007) opposite Shah Rukh Khan. She then featured in many videos such as Love Aaj Kal (2009), Cocktail (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Chennai Express and Ram-Leela (2013), Bajirao Mastani and Piku (2015), Padmaavat (2018), Chhapaak (2020) and eighty three (2021).
In an interview with Vogue India, Deepika said, “I do see the apparent disparity between men and female in almost any thing of life, but never in my journey have I felt the need to compare. And I think it’s to do with the truth that my sister and I weren’t added up like that. We weren’t constantly reminded of the truth that we have been girls, and so we had to go into the world questioning differently and conflict for what we deserved. But I did have to tackle other challenges. Coming from a sports activities history supposed I did no longer have a herbal inroad into Bollywood. My South Indian accent used to be also frowned upon and I firstly concerned about being written off because of it.”
On bringing a alternate in the Hindi film industry, she said, “If any praise for that change, no count how huge or small, comes my way, I will take it. It’s really a lot to digest, but at the equal time, I won’t say it’s unfaithful due to the fact my motive has always been that. As an outsider to the industry, I inadvertently ended up becoming an observer, which I trust has enabled me to alternate the reputation quo. Earlier, I probable didn’t have the self assurance or the clout to be in a position to effect change, but the wish for it was once always there. Even as a child, I was continually curious about why things have been performed a positive way. I would by no means take some thing lying down or be cozy with matters being exceeded to me on a platter.”
Meanwhile, Deepika will be considered for Nag Ashwin’s Project K alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Prabhas and Disha Patani. Along with Shahrukh Khan and John Abraham, his Pathan is also in the pipeline. Fans will see her in Fighter alongside Hrithik Roshan and Anil Kapoor. She was last seen in Shakun Batra’s Gehraiyaan. The movie also stars Ananya Pandey, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Patience Karwa, Rajat Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah.
