Ajay Devgn Reflects on Changing Meaning of Love in Modern Times

Veteran Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn has voiced concern over the evolving nature of romantic relationships, stating that the word “love” has lost its depth and meaning in today’s generation. His remarks came during a candid conversation with co-actor R. Madhavan on BookMyShow’s YouTube channel, as part of the promotional campaign for their upcoming film De De Pyaar De 2.

Devgn, known for his reserved public persona, offered a rare glimpse into his views on emotional intimacy and generational shifts in relationship values. “From where I see, it has become more casual than what it was,” he said. “The word love has been used so unnecessarily that it has lost its meaning. In our generation, you reached a point where you said ‘I love you.’ Before that, it was whatever it was — ‘like you’ or something else. But I think, right now, people don’t understand the depth of that word so it has been overused”.

His comments follow a recent statement by his wife, actress Kajol, who jokingly suggested that marriages should come with an “expiry date.” Speaking on her talk show Two Much, Kajol remarked, “What says you will get married to the right person at the right time? So, you should have a renewal option. And if there’s an expiry date, then we don’t have to suffer for too long”.

  1. Madhavan, who joined Devgn in the discussion, echoed similar sentiments. He recalled a time when the word “love” was treated with sincerity and emotional weight, even in small gestures. “Now even love for pets is considered the same as romantic love,” he added, highlighting the dilution of emotional vocabulary in contemporary culture.

The exchange between the two actors has sparked renewed public interest in how Bollywood celebrities perceive modern relationships, especially in the context of their own long-standing marriages. Ajay Devgn and Kajol, married since 1999, have often spoken openly about their relationship and the challenges of balancing personal and professional lives.

The conversation also reflects a broader cultural dialogue around the shifting dynamics of love, commitment, and emotional expression in the digital age. As social media and instant communication redefine intimacy, Devgn’s remarks serve as a reminder of the emotional gravity once associated with declarations of love.
