The French Riviera is aglow as the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival officially commenced today, Tuesday, May 12, 2026. Leading the Indian charge is global superstar Alia Bhatt, who stunned onlookers ahead of the opening ceremony in a bespoke Yash Patil gown.
The 33-year-old actress, styled by Rhea Kapoor, embraced a modern fairytale aesthetic in a pastel ball gown. The ensemble featured a structured bodice and a voluminous watercolor-inspired skirt, hand-painted with soft hues of green, blue, and cream. Keeping the focus on the intricate craftsmanship, Bhatt opted for a sleek bun and minimal, radiant makeup. This appearance marks her return to the festival following her 2025 debut in Schiaparelli.
Bhatt represents L’Oréal Paris as a global brand ambassador, alongside veteran Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Aditi Rao Hydari. The Indian delegation this year is particularly robust, featuring stars like Jacqueline Fernandez and Tara Sutaria, as well as filmmaker Karan Johar. Notable digital creators, including Sufi Motiwala and Ishita Mangal, are also present to document the intersection of cinema and fashion.
Beyond the red carpet, Bhatt has a massive year ahead. She will soon lead the YRF Spy Universe in Alpha, set for release on July 10, 2026. Fans are also eagerly awaiting her collaboration with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War, now scheduled for a Republic Day weekend release in January 2027. The Cannes Film Festival will continue to showcase global cinema through May 23.
