Gadar director Anil Sharma had revealed how he prevented Priyanka Chopra from leaving the film industry after her nose surgery went wrong.
Priyanka Chopra made her Hindi film debut with filmmaker Anil Sharma’s Hero: Love Story of a Spy. Earlier, Anil, best known for directing the Gadar films, had revealed how he prevented Priyanka from leaving the film industry after her nose surgery went wrong.
The director not only retained her in Hero but also convinced producers Suneel Darshan and Subhash Ghai for the films Andaaz and Aitraaz respectively. Hero also featured Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta in lead roles.
In a recent conversation with Vicky Lalwani, Anil was asked about his opinion on how he kickstarted Priyanka’s career. During the conversation, he clarified that even though he had no direct hand in Priyanka’s success, he did support her when she was on the verge of quitting the industry after her nose surgery.
He said, “I have no hand in her success. She is successful because she is so talented and when you are so good, God sometimes brings people in your life who push you forward. And I think I can be one of those people.” When asked if Priyanka is still in touch with him, he replied, “She is in touch with me.
If she sees me in a crowd of 100 people, she comes to meet me. We have a good relationship. I also shared a good relationship with her late father.” Anil Sharma was also asked why he never worked with Priyanka Chopra again after Hero.
Giving the reason for this, he said, “Priyanka Chopra has become such a big star, so there should be a role for her as well.” Earlier, in a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Anil had revealed that Priyanka had lost several projects after her nose surgery.
She even returned her signing amount of Rs 5 lakh for Hero and made up her mind to go back to Bareilly, where her father was posted in the Army at the time. However, Anil convinced her to reconsider her decision.
Recalling the incident, he said, “She came with the cheque. She said she has been fired from the job and now she is going back to Bareilly. They said they are waiting for me to give them back. I said you keep the money and I scolded her a bit. Then she told me what actually happened to her nose.”
The filmmaker added, “She said her father has already come back to Bareilly and rejoined his duty in the Army. Her mother said she will also resume her practice. They thought Priyanka will take some time to recover, so they will come back after a year or two. They were paying a lot of rent here, and they were common people, not like the Ambanis. I told them to stop doing this.”
