Bengali film director Buddhadev Dasgupta passes away

Film director Buddhadev Dasgupta dies at his residence in South Calcutta. He was reportedly ill for quite some time, suffering from age-related problems and kidney problems and also undergoing dialysis. He passed away at around 6 this morning. The news of his death marked the end of a golden chapter in Bengali cinema.

His family informed that he also underwent dialysis yesterday but today the director died in his sleep. The doctor then declared him dead this morning after he respond at all. He was 77 at the time of his death. The funeral of the late director will be completed today.

‘Durrotto’, ‘Nim Annapurna’, ‘Griho Juddho’, ‘Fera’, ‘Bagh Bahadur’, ‘Uttara’ are some of his notable films.

Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s death has cast a shadow of mourning over the film world. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed deep grief over the demise of the Director, “His death caused irreparable damage to the film world. Condolences to the family and fans,” The Chief Minister wrote in his condolence message. Aparna Sen has also expressed grief over the demise of Buddhadev Dasgupta. She says, “Buddhadev Dasgupta’s movies were like poems.”

Buddhadev Dasgupta was born on 11 February 1944 in the village of Anara in Purulia. His father was a railway doctor. So he spent his childhood in different places. He studied economics at Scottish Church College and Calcutta University. Mr. Dasgupta began his career as a professor of economics. But he also showed enthusiasm in film studies. He started it all by making a documentary in 1986.

In 1986, he won the national award for directing the first full-length film “Durrotto”. Then there are “Neem Annapurna”, ‘Griho Juddho’, ‘Fera’, ‘Bagh Bahadur’, ‘Uttara’, ‘Tahader Kotha’, ‘Charachar’, one after the other. There were several national awards in his prize pool. Buddhadev Dasgupta had also received foreign awards for directing films.
