Renowned celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor showcased the richness of Indian cuisine as a guest judge on the latest episode of MasterChef Australia Season 18, where contestants faced an Indian-themed mystery box challenge. The episode highlighted the diversity of Indian ingredients and encouraged participants to create innovative dishes inspired by the country’s culinary traditions.
The mystery box featured ingredients such as raw turmeric, guava, palm jaggery, garam masala, curry leaves, whole coconut, sweet potato, spinach, lamb rack and mussels. Contestants also had access to Indian cooking essentials, including basmati rice, moong dal, ghee, mustard oil and a selection of spices, allowing them to experiment with authentic flavours and techniques.
A variety of creative dishes emerged during the challenge, but it was Casper Kenworthy who impressed the judges with his sweet potato and spinach curry, pickled mussels, finger millet roti and moong dal curry-leaf coconut podi masala. While tasting the dish, Kapoor playfully questioned whether it truly reflected Indian cuisine before ultimately praising it as “outstanding” and remarking, “This is what India is.”
Casper’s winning dish earned him immunity from the next elimination round and an exclusive one-on-one cooking session with Sanjeev Kapoor. The episode celebrated India’s rich culinary heritage while demonstrating how traditional ingredients can inspire contemporary cooking on one of the world’s most popular culinary competition shows.
