Cheque Bounce Case: Court Issues NBW Against Ram Gopal Varma

Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is facing legal trouble as a Mumbai sessions court has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) for his arrest in connection with a cheque bounce case. This development follows the court’s rejection of his plea for suspension of a jail sentence previously handed down by a lower court.

The legal proceedings stem from a complaint filed by a company that supplied hard disks to Varma’s production firm. According to the complaint, cheques issued by Varma’s company were dishonored due to insufficient funds.

Earlier, a judicial magistrate in Andheri convicted Varma under the provisions of the Negotiable Instruments Act. He was sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment and directed to pay a sum to the complainant. Varma subsequently filed an appeal with the sessions court seeking a suspension of the sentence. However, Additional Sessions Judge A.A. Kulkarni rejected his plea, leading to the issuance of the NBW. The court stated that Mr. Varma must be present in court in order to file further applications. The matter has been adjourned for the execution of the warrant. The judge clarified that Varma has the option to file for bail after appearing before the court. This legal entanglement adds another layer of complexity to Varma’s public profile, known for his often-controversial statements and filmmaking style. The case continues to unfold, and further developments are expected.
