Court-Cleared Haal Secures Christmas Release

Shane Nigam’s film Haal is finally set for release on December 25, after months of delay caused by a censorship dispute and legal battle. The Central Board of Film Certification had initially demanded 16 cuts, including the removal of a beef biryani scene, which the filmmakers challenged in the Kerala High Court. The court struck down several cuts and dismissed appeals from the CBFC and Catholic Congress, allowing the film to be cleared with a UA 16+ certificate.

Directed by Veera and written by Nishad Koya, Haal will now join the Christmas line-up alongside big releases such as Mohanlal’s Vrusshabha, Nivin Pauly’s Sarvam Maya, and Biju Menon–Joju George starrer Valathu Vashathe Kallan. The film’s promotional poster highlights its struggle, stating it is “finally reaching audiences with court approval.”

The controversy has sparked wider debate about censorship and artistic freedom in Indian cinema. Industry observers note that the case sets an important precedent for filmmakers resisting restrictive certification demands. For audiences, the release of Haal has become symbolic of creative resilience, making its Christmas debut one of the most closely watched events in Malayalam cinema this year.
