In a significant development for Indian cinema, Vyjayanthi Movies has officially announced that actress Deepika Padukone will not be part of the upcoming sequel to Kalki 2898 AD. The production house issued a formal statement on social media, citing an inability to continue the partnership despite a long and collaborative journey during the making of the first film.
The statement read: “This is to officially announce that @deepikapadukone will not be a part of the upcoming sequel of #Kalki2898AD. After careful consideration, we have decided to part ways. Despite the long journey of making the first film, we were unable to find a partnership. And a film like @Kalki2898AD deserves that commitment and much more. We wish her the best with her future works”.
Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin, was widely acclaimed for its ambitious blend of mythology and science fiction. The film featured a star-studded cast including Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone, who portrayed Sumathi—the prophesied mother of Kalki, the final avatar of Vishnu. Her character played a pivotal role in anchoring the emotional core of the narrative.
While the production team has not yet disclosed who will replace Padukone in the sequel, her departure is expected to impact the storyline significantly. Industry observers speculate that the sequel may either reimagine Sumathi’s arc or introduce a new character to maintain narrative continuity.
This announcement follows Padukone’s recent exit from other high-profile projects, including Spirit, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, reportedly due to differences over working hours and remuneration. She was also previously attached to the Indian adaptation of The Intern, but has since stepped down to focus on her role as a producer.
Despite these exits, Padukone remains active in the industry, with upcoming appearances in Atlee’s next film alongside Allu Arjun and a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s King. Her departure from Kalki 2898 AD 2 marks a notable shift in the casting dynamics of one of India’s most anticipated cinematic franchises.
