Dhanush’s ‘Idly Kadai’ Premieres on Netflix After Mixed Theatrical Run

Actor-filmmaker Dhanush’s latest directorial venture, Idly Kadai, has officially made its digital debut on Netflix as of October 29, 2025. The rural drama, which opened in theatres on October 1 during the Ayudha Pooja weekend, is now available for streaming in five languages—Tamil, Telugu (as Idly Kottu), Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam.

Idly Kadai marks Dhanush’s 52nd acting project and his fourth outing as a director. The film features him in the lead role of Murugan, a young man who leaves his village to chase dreams in Dubai but returns home to take up his family’s legacy—an idli restaurant. The narrative explores themes of ambition, identity, and community, set against the backdrop of rural Tamil Nadu.

The film boasts a robust ensemble cast including Nithya Menen, Arun Vijay, Shalini Pandey, Rajkiran, Sathyaraj, Parthiban, Samuthirakani, and Prakash Raj. Menen reunites with Dhanush following their previous collaboration, adding emotional depth to the storyline. The production is jointly backed by Dawn Pictures and Wunderbar Films.

Despite high expectations, Idly Kadai received mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon its theatrical release. It faced stiff competition at the box office, initially from Pawan Kalyan’s OG and later from Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1. Nevertheless, the film managed to gross ₹21 crore net in India during its run.

Netflix acquired the streaming rights for a reported ₹45 crore, signaling strong confidence in the film’s digital potential. Promotional campaigns emphasized the emotional core of the story, with Netflix India captioning its release post: “An idli shop started with love can only be completed with love”.

With its arrival on OTT, Idly Kadai is poised to reach a broader audience, offering viewers a heartfelt tale of rediscovery and familial bonds. Industry watchers are keen to see how the film performs on streaming platforms, especially given Dhanush’s growing reputation as a multifaceted storyteller.
