Goodbye Lata Mangeshkar: Legendary singer laid to rest with full state honours

A glorious journey of over eight decades comes to an end.

Mangeshkar, 92, who died on Sunday in a Mumbai hospital, didn’t just sing songs in Hindi but almost every other Indian language. Her chameleon-like quality as a singer made her the perfect choice for actresses of all decades, resulting in her lending voice as a playback singer from Madhubala to Preity Zinta.

The mortal remains of the Nightingale of India were taken home to Prabhukunj Building and kept there for a couple of hours for people to pay their last respects. Later, they were shifted to Shivaji Park where the public caught a final glimpse of her from 4-6.30 p.m. Thereafter, around 6.45 p.m. the Bharat Ratna singer was accorded a funeral with full state honours adhering to all Covid protocols. Two days of mourning will be observed on the demise of the legendary singer.

The Bharat Ratna awardee tested positive for coronavirus with mild symptoms and was admitted on January 8 to Breach Candy Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), where she was being treated by a team of doctors. Her condition had improved in January and she was taken off the ventilator, but her health deteriorated on Saturday. As soon as the news of her sad demise spread across, Bollywood stars took to social media to mourn the loss. Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal were among the first ones to react to the news.
