Imtiaz Ali Shares Filmmaking Insights, Expresses Interest in Northeast Stories

Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali captivated audiences during a masterclass at the Sikkim International Film Festival, offering valuable insights into filmmaking and storytelling.
Speaking at a session titled The Craft of Directing and Screenwriting, Ali emphasized the importance of pre-production, describing it as a critical stage that shapes both the story and execution of a film. He explained that each project demands a unique approach, citing examples from his films like Rockstar and Highway, which differed significantly in shooting schedules and style.
Ali also spoke about his creative process, noting his preference for a flexible and free-flowing approach rather than following a rigid structure. His session provided aspiring filmmakers with practical insights into the art of direction and screenplay writing.
Praising the efforts of the Sikkim government, led by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, Ali lauded the initiative to host such a platform that promotes cinema and creativity.
Expressing a strong interest in the region, the filmmaker said he hopes to return to Sikkim for future projects. He also shared his desire to collaborate with local talent and explore stories rooted in the Northeast.
The session concluded with Ali being felicitated by the Asian Anime and Manga Academy, marking a memorable highlight of the festival’s opening day.
