DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has officially announced the release date and title of the highly anticipated sequel to his 2025 blockbuster Superman. The new film, titled Man of Tomorrow, is slated to hit theaters worldwide on July 9, 2027, marking the next chapter in Gunn’s revitalized DC cinematic universe.
The announcement was made via Gunn’s social media accounts, accompanied by striking comic book artwork featuring Superman and his arch-nemesis Lex Luthor. The image, originally created by DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee, shows Superman smiling while leaning on Luthor, who is clad in his iconic purple-and-green Warsuit.
Returning to the lead role is actor David Corenswet, whose portrayal of Clark Kent in Superman was widely praised for its emotional depth and fresh take on the immigrant narrative. Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor, setting the stage for a more personal and physical confrontation between the two characters.
The original Superman film, released in July 2025, was Gunn’s first directorial venture under his leadership at DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran. It opened to strong box office numbers, earning $122 million in its opening weekend and eventually grossing $352 million domestically and over $600 million worldwide, making it the most successful DC release since Wonder Woman in 2017.
Gunn has hinted that Man of Tomorrow will delve deeper into the ideological and emotional clash between Superman and Luthor, with the latter now equipped with his high-tech Warsuit—a nod to one of the most iconic storylines in DC Comics history.
The sequel is part of DC’s accelerated release slate, which includes Supergirl in 2026, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, and The Batman Part II, scheduled for October 1, 2027.
With Man of Tomorrow, Gunn continues to reshape the DC Universe, blending classic heroism with contemporary storytelling. Fans and critics alike are eager to see how the saga of the Man of Steel evolves under his visionary direction.
