Mumbai, September 12 — In a landmark pre-release move, the makers of Kantara: Chapter 1 have secured a massive ₹125 crore digital rights deal with Amazon Prime Video, setting a new benchmark for Kannada cinema. The agreement, which covers all language versions, positions the film as one of the most lucrative OTT acquisitions in South Indian film history, second only to KGF: Chapter 2.
Directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Hombale Films, Kantara: Chapter 1 serves as a mythological prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. The film explores the origins of the Bhuta Kola tradition in pre-colonial coastal Karnataka, promising a rich cultural narrative backed by high-end production values. With over 20 international VFX studios contributing to post-production, the film is being crafted as a global cinematic experience.
The theatrical release is scheduled for October 2, 2025, coinciding with Gandhi Jayanti. A trailer launch is expected around September 20 to build momentum ahead of the release. Industry insiders suggest that the OTT deal has already helped the film recover its full production cost, making it a financially secure venture even before its box office debut.
Adding to the buzz, Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh is reportedly collaborating on a special track for the film, further amplifying its pan-India appeal. With its mythological depth, visual scale, and strategic partnerships, Kantara: Chapter 1 is poised to be one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
