Mumbai, July 31, 2025 — Celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar has revealed plans to potentially develop a standalone film centered on the poignant love story between veteran actors Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra, as portrayed in his 2023 directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The announcement comes as the film marks its two-year anniversary, continuing to resonate with audiences for its layered storytelling and progressive themes.
In a recent interview, Johar reflected on the film’s legacy, placing it alongside his most cherished works such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and My Name Is Khan. He acknowledged the emotional and financial significance of these projects, particularly noting how Kuch Kuch Hota Hai had revitalized his father Yash Johar’s production house during a period of financial strain.
The romantic subplot between Azmi and Dharmendra—who played estranged lovers and grandparents to the lead characters—was a standout element in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, sparking widespread discussion, especially around their on-screen kiss. Johar addressed the public interest in this narrative, stating, “There is a separate love story there. I may one day make a film on their love story in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani”.
The original film, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, explored themes of cultural clash, gender roles, and familial expectations through the lens of a cross-cultural romance. Azmi and Dharmendra’s subplot added emotional depth and generational contrast, earning praise for its sensitivity and realism.
While no formal production timeline has been announced, Johar’s comments have sparked anticipation across the industry and among fans. The proposed film is expected to delve deeper into the characters’ past, offering a nuanced portrayal of love, regret, and reunion in later life.
Meanwhile, Johar is gearing up for the release of Dhadak 2, starring Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi, slated to hit theatres on August 1, 2025.
