Kiran Rao shared her thoughts on Aamir Khan often being credited for her success, which she feels is unfair.
Kiran Rao’s second directorial venture Missing Ladies not only won the hearts of Indian audiences but was also selected as India’s official entry to the Oscars. Co-produced by her ex-husband Aamir Khan, the film has given rise to discussions about Kiran’s journey as a filmmaker. In a recent conversation, Kiran shared her views on Aamir often being credited for her success, which she feels is unfair.
During an interaction on Kareena Kapoor’s talk show What Women Want, Kiran revealed that she feels it is ‘despicable’ for people to attribute her success to Aamir Khan. She said, “It’s natural. He is known for doing such quality work. Personally, I attribute a lot of my success in life to a very supportive and talented partner who matches me intellectually and supports everything I do. He has played a huge role in my life, but for others to attribute my achievements solely to him is a travesty… and I think a lot of women are used to that happening to them.”
Before Missing Ladies, Kiran Rao made her directorial debut with the 2011 release Dhobi Ghat. Though the film performed mediocre at the box office, it received a lot of critical acclaim. Kiran has also co-produced several famous projects with Aamir, including Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, Peepli Live, Delhi Belly, Talaash, Dangal and more.
On the talk show, Kiran also shared her thoughts on how she sometimes finds Aamir Khan’s long lectures challenging, jokingly describing them as close to “mansplaining”. “I would say… he can go and give lectures. Like sometimes he gives long lectures about certain things and I don’t like them. I mean, it’s not exactly mansplaining, but it’s almost like that,” she said.
Aamir and Kiran have been married for 16 years and are also actively involved in co-parenting their son Azad.
