Maheep Kapoor, often called the original “Bollywood wife,” has admitted that the worldwide response to Netflix’s Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives completely shifted her perspective on the show.
The reality series, produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, initially struck Maheep as light and superficial. But years later, the warmth and stories she’s heard from fans across the globe have made her see it in a whole new light.
Speaking on The Himanshu Mehta Show, Maheep shared a moment in London that left her emotional.
“I was just standing in a queue, getting my coffee with almond milk, when a woman walked up to me,” Maheep recalled.
“She told me, ‘I laughed and laughed through my chemo with you. You got me through so much.’ I actually felt like breaking down right there. I had always dismissed the show as frivolous. But in that moment I realised — if I can bring even a little joy to someone going through a hard time, then it matters.”
Maheep has long lived in the spotlight of a superstar family, and she’s always been comfortable in that space. But the kind of personal attention and love that came after Fabulous Lives was something new for her, and she says she’s genuinely enjoying it now.
She also remembered how even her husband, actor Sanjay Kapoor, was taken by surprise by the show’s early buzz.
“This was during Covid. I was stuck at home and Sanjay was in London,” she said with a laugh.
“He called me and said, ‘You should be here. People are stopping me and saying — oh, we’ve seen you in Bollywood Wives.’ And Sanjay, being Sanjay, cheekily replied, ‘Hello, I’ve been working for years!’”
For Maheep, what began as a glamorous, no-strings reality show has now become something more meaningful — a reminder that even “frivolous” entertainment can offer comfort, laughter, and connection to people who need it most.
