Meghalaya Government to focus on infrastructure development

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said that it his government’s concerted effort to focus on infrastructure development across the State. 

“The laying of foundation for upgradation of the Pasyih to Garampani Road, West Jaintia 

Hills under the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) of World Bank India is a step towards fulfilling the needs of our people for better roads and will strengthen  connectivity between neighbouring villages in the area,” he said after laying the  foundation for the vital road on Friday.  “This is a foundation of hope for a better future not only for Pasyih and Garampani but for the entire Jaiñtia Hills district and it is our promise to continue our efforts to connect our villages through better roads across the State,” the chief minister said.

Connecting Meghalaya to Assam, the Passyih – Garampani road is a State Highway starting from 8th Mile of Jowai – Ratacherra Road (NH 6) and ends at Saphai near the boundary of Meghalaya – Assam border. The total length is 46.982 Km.  The portion of this road from 21st km to 47th km (Total length of 26.982 Km) has been  sanctioned under Meghalaya Integrated Transport Project (MITP) funded by World Bank. The road passes through several villages including Pyntei, Biar, Chatwakhu, Nongkroh, Lakadong, Theym and Saphai habitation areas. 

The total cost of the project is Rs 62,49,18,004.

Meanwhile, with the aim to enhance sports infrastructure across Meghalaya,  Sangma also laid foundation for the Wahiajer Multi Sports Complex.

The project is funded through State Plan Scheme and Sports Authority of India’s Khelo 

India Infrastructure Scheme and the cost of the project is Rs. 24,97,11,000.

The Chief Minister said that the provision of sports infrastructure will help hone the skills of  sporting talents from the area and encourage youth of the State to take up sports as a career. Touching on the Meghalaya State Sports Policy, he said policies are being formulated to give direction to departments and guidance to the Government to create such infrastructure for the youth to excel in their skill and passion and encourage them to follow their dreams.
