Meghalaya lifts several COVID-19 restrictions

The Meghalaya government on Tuesday lifted several restrictions to ease the State out of its COVID-19 pandemic restriction.

Meghalaya had imposed several restrictions after the country went into a lockdown following the outbreak of the pandemic last year.

It however lifted some of the restrictions in the last Winter after the state witnessed a decline on COVID-19 infection.

Several restrictions still continue like the getting a mandatory COVID-19 test for visitors into the State and the night curfew from 11 pm to 5 am.

After a review meeting on COVID-19 pandemic, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that one of the most important decisions was allowing 100 percent public transports to ply across the State by withdrawing restrictions which had allowed public transport to function on an odd-even basis.

Earlier, only 50 percent of the public transport could operate as the government allowed these vehicles to ply on an odd-even basis.

Tynsong however said for private transport, odd and even number will continue till further orders.

The Deputy Chief Minister informed that restriction on places of worship in which only one-third of the total strength could attend such places has also been revised.

“Now 75 percent of the total strength of members, in a particular place of worship, are allowed to attend prayer services,” he informed.

Similarly, restrictions have been lifted in sports. Earlier only non contact sports were allowed in the State.

“All sporting activities would be allowed in the State. But the participation can be only 75 percent,” Tynsong said.

Furthermore, he also informed that tourist spots have also been thrown open for visitors and there would be no restrictions in such places.

“The government has also allowed children and senior citizens to visit these places, but under the supervision of an adult member,” he said, adding that the relaxation made by the government is again subjected to compliance of the SOPs to be issued by the concerned department.
