The announcement of the film Operation Sindoor, inspired by India’s recent military strikes in Pakistan, has sparked controversy and backlash. Director Uttam Maheshwari, who unveiled the project on May 9, faced criticism for its timing amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. The film, produced by Nicky Vicky Bhagnani Films and The Content Engineer, features a poster depicting a woman soldier applying sindoor in a battlefield setting.
Following widespread criticism on social media, Maheshwari issued an apology, stating that his intent was never to hurt or provoke anyone’s sentiments. He emphasized that the film was born out of deep respect for the Indian Armed Forces and was not meant for fame or monetization. He acknowledged that the timing may have caused discomfort and expressed regret.
The backlash intensified as many users accused the filmmakers of capitalizing on the conflict for commercial gain. Some called for a boycott of the film, arguing that such projects should not exploit national security concerns. Additionally, within two days of the film’s announcement, over 30 title applications related to Operation Sindoor were submitted to industry bodies, including Mission Sindoor and Sindoor: The Revenge.
Amid the controversy, Puja Films, owned by Vashu and Jackky Bhagnani, clarified that they were not associated with the project. The production house distanced itself from the film, expressing solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces during this sensitive time.
The debate surrounding Operation Sindoor continues, with discussions on whether such films should be made during periods of heightened geopolitical tensions.
