Rajkumar Hirani reveals reworking PK script to avoid similarities with Nolan’s Inception

Rajkumar Hirani, the acclaimed director behind Bollywood classics like Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots, recently shared an intriguing revelation about his blockbuster film PK. Initially conceptualized with Aamir Khan playing an alien, Hirani disclosed that the script had to be altered due to its striking resemblance to Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

While developing the storyline for PK, the release of Inception made Hirani realize that both films shared similarities. To avoid any allegations of plagiarism, the director opted to revise the script. In an interview with Galatta Plus, Hirani revealed that the original concept of PK involved the protagonist entering people’s minds to alter their past experiences and change their perspectives on life. However, recognizing its resemblance to Inception, the team decided to overhaul the narrative to ensure originality.

After spotting these similarities, Hirani and his team explored a new direction where PK would navigate a courtroom drama. “We started writing something else. Then OMG – Oh My God came, which followed a similar path of courtroom sequences. So, the second half kept evolving,” Hirani shared.

The filmmaker admitted that several versions of the second half were attempted, but finding a satisfying outcome was challenging. Although one version was shot, Hirani was dissatisfied with the results, leading to reshoots of nearly 20 minutes of footage—a decision that significantly impacted the production timeline.
