Salman Khan told parents ‘Hindu-Muslim’ wasn’t the main hurdle in Salim Khan-Salma Khan marriage, reveals ‘big concern’

Actor Salman Khan is busy promoting his upcoming film Sikander.
During a recent press meet, the actor spoke about his parents, Salim Khan and Salma Khan’s marriage. Salman opened up about the challenges his parents faced in their marriage. Salman revealed that the main issue was not their different religious backgrounds but his father’s profession as a screenwriter.

Salim Khan married actress Helen.

Salma Khan’s original name was Sushila Charak. But she changed her name to Salma after marrying Salim Khan. According to Hindustan Times, Salman revealed that the objection from his maternal uncle’s side was never about Salim Khan’s religion but his association with the film industry.

“It was never about the differences in Hindu and Muslim culture and practices, the bigger and more worrying thing at that time was that ‘Yeh toh film line se hai’,” Salman said. Salim Khan had a great collaboration with fellow screenwriter Javed Akhtar and the duo, known as Salim-Javed, wrote several blockbusters such as Don and Sholay.

Salim Khan married Salma in November 1964 and has four children – Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, Sohail Khan and Alvira. In 1981, Salim married actress Helen. Salman and all his family members share a very good relationship with each other and are often seen together at festivals and functions.

In the past, Salim Khan had described his second marriage as an emotional accident. “She was young, I was young too. I had no such intention,” Salim said on Arbaaz’s chat show. He further added, “It is an emotional accident. This can happen to anyone.” He also talked about his love story with Salma and said, “Chup ke milte the idhar udhar kahin. I said no, I want to meet your parents. When I went, sab mere ko dekhne ke aa jhe tha jaise zoo me koi jaanu aaya hai naya ki dekhne chalte hain.”

In an interview with DNA, Salim praised both his wives and said, “I am lucky that I have two wives and they live in harmony. Never mind if this happened after a few years. My wives look good and now they are aging gracefully.” In an old interview with Zoom, Salim recalled that Salma had problems with his relationship with Helen. He had said, “When I told her, she didn’t shake my hand and didn’t tell me what a great job I was doing. Of course, we had some problems, but for a very short time. After that, everything was accepted.”

On the work front, Salman is awaiting the release of his film Sikandar, which is backed by Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The film is directed by AR Murugadoss, who is known for directing Tamil and Hindi films such as Ghajini, Thuppakki, Holiday: A Soldier Is Never Off Duty and Sarkar.

Sikandar, which also stars Kajal Aggarwal and Rashmika Mandanna, is scheduled to release in theatres on Eid 2025, March 30.
