Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut web series has recreated maximum buzz over the internet since it got released on OTT. The web series depicts about lives of tawaifs (courtesan) in Heeramandi, Lahore.
According to ‘Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar’ demonstrates nath utrai as a ceremony, where the girl’s nose ring is taken off, symbolising her transition into becoming a Tawaif (courtesan). Typically, the girl would then engage in her first sexual encounter with a bidder who paid the highest amount for the privilege.
Every girl who aspires to be tawaif needs to go through the age old ritual, removing nose ring symbolises her status as tawaif marking the end of her virginity.
