Shabana Azmi has shared her thoughts on the settlement between Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut in the defamation case.
Almost a month after Javed Akhtar and Kangana Ranaut settled their defamation case, his wife Shabana Azmi has shared her thoughts on the matter. Javed had filed a case against Kangana in 2020 and the two parties had settled in February this year. However, Shabana has criticised the media coverage and criticised it for presenting it as a “mutual settlement”.
Bollywood Hungama quoted Shabana as clarifying that Javed Akhtar never sought monetary compensation from Kangana but only a written apology. She said, “He did not ask for any monetary compensation but a written apology. The victory is his and his lawyer Jay Bharadwaj’s.
” Slamming the media, Shabana said, “But I am surprised why the press made it look as if it was a mutual settlement but did not mention that it was a written apology he was asking for and why he fought the case for four and a half years.”
In the report submitted to the court, Kangana said, “The statements made by me in the interview on July 19, 2020 and thereafter were a result of misunderstanding. I unconditionally withdraw all the statements made by me…and I undertake not to repeat the same in future.
I apologise for the inconvenience caused to Shri Javed Akhtar who is one of the most senior members of the film fraternity and I respect him a lot.” In the mediation report, Javed said, “In view of the statements made by Ms Kangana Ranaut, I agree to withdraw the complaint…” Later, Kangana also shared a happy picture with Javed Akhtar from the court.
He wrote, “Today Javed Ji and I have settled our legal matter (defamation case) through mediation, in the mediation Javed Ji has been very kind and gracious, he has even agreed to write songs for my next directorial.” Javed had accused Kangana of defaming him in one of her interviews and dragging his name in Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case.
He alleged that Kangana has made defamatory statements on national and international television. In response, Kangana had filed a counter-complaint against Javed, accusing him of extortion and outraging his dignity by violating his privacy.
