A bronze statue of Bollywood icons Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, depicting their iconic pose from the 1995 blockbuster Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ), is set to be installed at Leicester Square in London. This marks a historic moment as it will be the first time an Indian film is honored at this prestigious location.
The statue will join the “Scenes in the Square” movie trail, which celebrates legendary films and characters. Positioned on the eastern terrace outside the Odeon cinema, the statue pays tribute to a memorable scene from DDLJ, a film that has become a cultural phenomenon over the years. Interestingly, Leicester Square itself features in the movie as the place where the characters Raj and Simran unknowingly cross paths for the first time.
DDLJ, directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Raj Films, follows the love story of two young non-resident Indians who fall in love during a European vacation. The film, which was largely shot in the UK, is considered one of the most successful Bollywood movies of all time and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of fans worldwide.
The unveiling of the statue is scheduled for spring 2025, ahead of the film’s 30th anniversary on October 20, 2025. This initiative not only celebrates the global popularity of Bollywood but also highlights London’s rich cultural diversity. It is expected to attract fans from around the world, further strengthening the cultural bridge between India and the UK.
The Heart of London Business Alliance, which oversees the “Scenes in the Square” trail, expressed excitement about adding “titans of international cinema” Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to their collection. This recognition underscores the enduring legacy of DDLJ and its impact on global cinema. What a beautiful way to honor Bollywood’s magic!
