“The Universe Had Its Own Plans”: Shanaya Kapoor on Overcoming Bollywood Debut Hurdles

For many aspiring actors, a shelved debut film under a major banner like Dharma Productions could be a career-ending blow. However, for Shanaya, initially set to enter the limelight with Karan Johar’s Bedhadak, Shanaya faced a period of uncertainty when the project was eventually called off. Instead of letting the setback define her, she utilized the hiatus to dive deeper into her training. “I feel everything happens for a reason. The film getting shelved, and certain projects happening and then not happening, made me who I am today. It made me work on my craft much more during the time I wasn’t facing the camera.” — Shanaya Kapoor

Shanaya credited her father, veteran actor Sanjay Kapoor, for keeping her grounded during the “waiting period.” His advice was simple yet effective: focus on the process, not the outcome.

According to Shanaya, her father encouraged her to perform for any audience she could find—even if it wasn’t in front of a professional camera. He reminded her that while external circumstances are uncontrollable, a performer’s dedication to their craft is entirely within their hands. This “head down, work hard” mentality became her guiding principle. The wait eventually paid off. Shanaya made her big-screen debut alongside Vikrant Massey in the romantic drama Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan, directed by Santosh Singh. More recently, she has been receiving praise for her work in Tu Yaa Main, a project backed by Aanand L. Rai.

Reflecting on her current trajectory, Shanaya expressed a sense of gratitude for the directors and co-stars she has collaborated with. Working with the likes of Bejoy Nambiar and Aanand L. Rai. Co-star Synergy: Learning alongside actors like Adarsh Gourav.
