Urvashi Criticizes National Awards Jury Over ‘Supporting Actress’ Tag, Demands Transparency

Veteran Malayalam actor Urvashi has publicly voiced her dissatisfaction with the jury of the 71st National Film Awards, following her recognition as Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Ullozhukku. In a series of candid interviews, Urvashi questioned the rationale behind her categorization, asserting that her role was central to the film and deserved consideration in the Best Actress category.

Urvashi stated that the jury failed to provide any explanation for their decision, calling the process opaque and inconsistent. “This is not pension money to be silently accepted,” she remarked, emphasizing that awards should be earned with pride and clarity, not handed out without justification.

She further criticized the jury’s criteria, citing examples such as veteran actor Vijayaraghavan’s lead role in Pookkaalam, which was similarly awarded in the supporting category. Urvashi also questioned the exclusion of critically acclaimed films like Aadujeevitham from major categories, suggesting that political considerations may have influenced the outcomes.

In addition, Urvashi revealed that her performance in J Baby, submitted for Best Actress consideration, was allegedly not even viewed by the jury. She expressed concern that such oversights undermine the credibility of the awards and discourage genuine artistic effort.

The actor has approached Union Minister and fellow actor Suresh Gopi to investigate the matter and advocate for greater transparency in the selection process. Her remarks have sparked widespread debate within the film industry, with many echoing her call for reform and fairness in national recognition.

Urvashi’s critique adds to growing concerns about the integrity of the National Film Awards, particularly regarding representation and recognition of regional cinema. Her statements have resonated with artists and audiences alike, reigniting conversations about the need for accountability and inclusivity in India’s most prestigious film honors.
