Veteran Actor and Producer Dheeraj Kumar Passes Away at 79

Mumbai, July 15, 2025 — Renowned actor, producer, and television pioneer Dheeraj Kumar passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 due to complications from acute pneumonia. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai over the weekend, where he was placed under intensive care and ventilator support.

Kumar’s family confirmed his passing in an official statement, noting that he died peacefully around noon, surrounded by loved ones. “He was always laughing, always giving, and always present—for his family, friends, and the industry at large. A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many,” the statement read.

His final rites will be held on Wednesday at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle West. His mortal remains will be brought home early in the morning for last respects before the cremation ceremony.

Dheeraj Kumar’s career spanned over five decades across Hindi and Punjabi cinema and Indian television. He began his journey in the entertainment industry as a finalist in a 1965 talent contest alongside Rajesh Khanna and Subhash Ghai. He made his film debut in Raaton Ka Raja (1970) and went on to appear in notable films such as Roti Kapada Aur Makaan (1974), Sargam (1979), and Kranti (1981). Between 1970 and 1984, he starred in over 20 Punjabi films.

In 1986, Kumar founded Creative Eye Limited, a production house that played a pivotal role in shaping Indian television. Under his leadership, the company produced several acclaimed mythological and family dramas including Om Namah Shivay, Shree Ganesh, Adalat, Rishton Ke Bhanwar Mein Uljhi Niyati, and Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyann.

His recent public appearance was at the inauguration of the ISKCON temple in Navi Mumbai, where he spoke about his spiritual beliefs and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to promote Sanatan Dharma.

Dheeraj Kumar leaves behind a legacy of storytelling that bridged generations and genres. Tributes have poured in from across the film and television fraternity, mourning the loss of a visionary who helped shape the contours of Indian entertainment.
