Yashpal Sharma, a former Indian cricketer who won the 1983 World Cup, died of major heart arrest on Tuesday at the age of 66. At 7:40 a.m., the former Indian batsman died of cardiac arrest. His wife Renu Sharma, two daughters Puja and Preeti, and son Chirag Sharma survive him.
The 66-year-old former Punjab cricketer, who was born in Ludhiana on August 11, 1954, was considered a talented middle-order batsman during a glittering cricket career that spanned the late 70s and 80s.
With a memorable 89-run match-winning effort, he helped India win the 1983 World Cup, giving the legendary West Indies squad their first defeat on the biggest platform. Yashpal didn’t stop there; in the semifinal against England, he hit 61 runs, including a stunning flick over square leg for six off a near-yorker from Bob Willis.
Divine Games’ Jatin Sharma will play Yashpal’s part in the upcoming film ’83, which is a tribute to the 1983 World Cup-winning team.
Yashpal achieved 1606 runs in 37 Tests for India, beginning in 1979 against England, with two hundred (highest score of 140) and nine fifties at an average of over 33. Soon after India’s dramatic 1983 World Cup victory, he played his final Test for the country against the formidable West Indians.
