Instagram Access Restored for Select Pakistani Celebrities in India Amid Ongoing Restrictions

In a notable development, the Instagram accounts of several Pakistani actors, including Mawra Hocane, Saba Qamar, Yumna Zaidi, Ahad Raza Mir, and Danish Taimoor, have become accessible once again to users in India. The accounts had been previously geoblocked following heightened diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan earlier this year.

The restrictions were imposed in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, including foreign nationals. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes targeting terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The Indian government subsequently restricted access to the social media profiles of numerous Pakistani artists and entertainment channels as part of a broader cultural and digital disengagement.

While the reinstatement of access to certain accounts has been observed since July 1, no official statement has been issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting or the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The absence of formal clarification has led to speculation over whether the move reflects a policy shift or a technical anomaly.

Despite the partial lifting of restrictions, prominent figures such as Mahira Khan, Fawad Khan, Atif Aslam, and Hania Aamir remain blocked. Attempts to access their profiles from India continue to display the message: “Account not available in India. This is because we complied with a legal request to restrict this content.”

The development has reignited public discourse on the intersection of geopolitics and digital expression. While some view the restored access as a step toward cultural normalization, others have criticized the inconsistency in enforcement and the lack of transparency surrounding the decision.

As of now, the Indian government has not confirmed whether the unblocking of select accounts is permanent or subject to further review.
