Bollywood star Karisma Kapoor is set to make her highly anticipated return to the digital screen with the neo-noir thriller Brown. Streamer ZEE5 announced on Thursday that the gripping series will officially premiere on June 5. Accompanying the release date announcement was an intense promotional poster featuring Kapoor with a serious expression against a puzzle-like backdrop, hinting at the intricate mystery to unfold.
Directed by Abhinay Deo and backed by Zee Studios, the web series is based on Abheek Barua’s acclaimed crime novel, City of Death. Set against the dark and brooding underbelly of Kolkata, the narrative centers on Rita Brown, a suicidal alcoholic police officer battling her own deep-seated trauma. She forms an unlikely partnership with Arjun Sinha, a grieving widower suffering from survivor’s guilt, as they track down a dangerous serial killer driven by a perceived divine purpose.
The project marks Kapoor’s second venture into the OTT space following her 2020 acting comeback in Mentalhood. Discussing the role, the veteran actress revealed that the complex character pushed her entirely out of her traditional comfort zone, requiring her to embrace raw and deeply flawed human emotions that she had never experimented with in her previous mainstream cinematic career.
Beyond its high-profile cast—which features stellar performances from Surya Sharma, Soni Razdan, Helen, KK Raina, and Jisshu Sengupta—Brown has already gained prominent international recognition. It holds the distinction of being the only Indian web series selected for the prestigious Berlinale Series Market Selects at the Berlin International Film Festival, raising expectations high for its upcoming streaming debut.
