Makoto Shinkai’s Next Anime Film to Release Globally Through Crunchyroll Crunchyroll has acquired worldwide distribution rights, including India, to the upcoming feature film from acclaimed Japanese anime filmmaker Makoto Shinkai. The film will be co-distributed by Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment, although its title, storyline and release date have not yet been announced. Shinkai is internationally recognised for acclaimed films such as Your Name., Weathering With You and Suzume. His latest feature, Suzume, released in 2023, earned more than $300 million worldwide, received a Golden Globe nomination and premiered in competition at the Berlin International Film Festival. It also became his third consecutive film to surpass 10 million domestic admissions in Japan. Shinkai began his filmmaking career with the self-produced short Voices of a Distant Star and went on to direct features including The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5 Centimetres Per Second and Children Who Chase Lost Voices. His films have received international recognition and numerous awards for their animation and storytelling. The global distribution deal for his next project is expected to expand its reach among anime audiences worldwide, including viewers in India. Fans will have to wait for further announcements regarding the film’s title, plot and release schedule.
