Virat Kohli clarifies Instagram ‘like’ controversy involving actress Avneet Kaur

Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli has responded to a social media controversy after fans noticed his verified Instagram account had liked a post on a fan page dedicated to Bollywood actress Avneet Kaur.

The interaction quickly gained traction online, sparking speculation and memes. Some users even dragged Kohli’s wife, actress Anushka Sharma, into the discussion, questioning the timing of the incident, which coincided with her birthday.

Amid growing buzz, Kohli took to Instagram Stories to issue a statement, clarifying that the interaction was unintentional and likely caused by an algorithmic error while clearing his feed.

“I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding,” Kohli wrote.

Despite Kohli’s clarification, the incident continued to trend, with fans sharing humorous takes and memes. Some users joked about the algorithm excuse, while others compared the situation to past celebrity social media mishaps.

Screenshots of the liked post circulated rapidly, with fans tagging Anushka Sharma and even Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, demanding accountability for what some believed was a technical glitch.

While the controversy dominated social media, Kohli remained focused on his IPL 2025 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). With seven wins in 10 matches, RCB currently sits second on the points table, tied with Mumbai Indians but behind on Net Run Rate.

Kohli and his team are set to face Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday night in Bengaluru. Meanwhile, CSK has already been eliminated from the playoff race.
