In 2003, actor Raj Kiran walked out of his home and never returned. More than two decades later, his disappearance remains one of Bollywood’s biggest unsolved mysteries.
Once a well-known face of the 80s and 90s, Raj Kiran starred in over 100 films including Karz, Arth, Baseraa and Raaj Tilak. Today, his name comes up not for his work, but for the question that refuses to die: Where is he?
A Career That Faded
Raj Kiran Mahtani made his debut in 1975 with B.R. Ishara’s Kaagaz Ki Nao. He found wider recognition with Subhash Ghai’s Karz in 1980, and earned critical praise for Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth in 1982. Through the 80s he was a regular on screen with films like Shikshaa, Maan Abhiman, Ek Naya Rishta, Justice Chaudhury, and Baseraa.
But by the early 1990s, the offers dried up. The actor who once had multiple releases a year slowly faded from the industry. Friends and family later spoke about Raj struggling with depression as work became scarce, though there was never any official medical confirmation.
He was married to Roopa and they had two daughters, Rishika and Mannat. After his disappearance, reports claimed Roopa remarried.
The Troubling Signs
The first public sign of his turmoil came in 1996. According to reports, Raj tried to enter Sathya Sai Baba’s Puttaparthi Ashram at night using a tractor and a ladder. He was arrested and spent 34 days in Bengaluru Central Jail before his father managed to get him out.
Speaking to Cine Blitz later, Raj called it a traumatic experience.
“The fear when you are told you cannot be bailed out… I was not sure if I would ever be free. That is a very scary feeling,” he said.
He insisted the incident was blown out of proportion, but it added to the sense that his life was unraveling.
Years later, Mahesh Bhatt recalled meeting Raj at Mumbai’s Masina Hospital where he was reportedly undergoing psychiatric treatment.
“He was not the Raj Kiran I had known. He looked sombre and depressed, and spoke with great difficulty,” Bhatt told Rediff in 2011.
“We tried giving him roles, but once people believe you’re mentally unstable, nobody wants to touch you with a barge pole.”
Bhatt said Raj eventually moved to the US to live with his brother. And then, around 2003, all contact stopped.
The Vanishing and The Theories Since that last meeting with his family in 2003, there has been no confirmed sighting. Over the years, there have been private investigators, a police complaint, and multiple alleged sightings — from a taxi driver in New York to claims that he was living in the US.
The most talked-about lead came in 2011. Actor Rishi Kapoor, during a trip to the US, reportedly spoke to Raj’s brother Govind.
“I was relieved when Govind told me Raj was alive. But he was confined to an institution in Atlanta because of health issues,” Rishi told journalist Subhash K Jha.
Rishi also said Raj was working inside the institution and was financially secure due to investments from his film days.
That account reignited hope. But no photographs, no video, and no direct contact ever followed.
The Search Continues
Now, 23 years after he disappeared, the case has come back into focus. Actor Somy Ali says she has spent years searching for Raj across the United States to fulfil a promise she made to the late Rishi Kapoor. Her efforts have once again put the spotlight on the central question Bollywood has failed to answer: Did Raj Kiran choose to walk away from his old life? Did illness push him into isolation? Were the US sightings real? Or did something happen to him before any of those stories surfaced?
For an industry that remembers him for his intense performances, Raj Kiran’s story ends not with a final scene, but with silence. And for now, that silence remains unbroken.
