YRF Steps Into Horror For The First Time: Varun Dhawan To Lead Abhay Pannu’s 2027 Thriller

In a major genre shift, Yash Raj Films is set to break new ground. For the first time in its decades-long history, Bollywood’s leading production banner YRF is foraying into horror with a big-screen feature slated for a 2027 theatrical release.

The studio has roped in Varun Dhawan to headline the project. The announcement positions the Sui Dhaaga actor as the face of YRF’s maiden horror offering.

At the helm of the film is Abhay Pannu, the director-writer who won nationwide acclaim for the critically praised series Rocket Boys. This will also mark Pannu’s debut as a feature film director in theatres. He has not only been entrusted with direction but has also written the screenplay for the upcoming horror drama. Production is expected to begin later this year.

Sources close to the development say the project has been “strategically championed” by Akshaye Widhani, CEO of YRF, and greenlit under the overall creative leadership of Aditya Chopra.

YRF’s Genre Expansion
YRF has built its legacy across romance, action, spy thrillers, drama, and biopics. But horror is one space the banner has never explored — until now. With this 2027 release, the studio will complete its run across mainstream genres.

The move comes on the back of YRF’s recent push to back new-age storytellers with distinct voices. After working with directors like Mohit Suri and Sameer Saxena, the studio is now betting on Pannu. The decision follows the strong momentum created by the success of Saiyaara, which further reinforced YRF’s commitment to diverse and experimental cinema.
