Himalayan Tale ‘Shape of Momo’ Hits Theaters May 29 with Zoya Akhtar and Payal Kapadia as Producers

Shape of Momo is a poignant drama set in a Himalayan village in Sikkim, exploring the emotional legacies and daily rhythms of three generations of women. The film gained international recognition after winning accolades at the Busan International Film Festival and screening at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Its domestic release is being handled by Spirit Media, the distribution banner founded by actor-producer Rana Daggubati, which has recently become a champion for acclaimed independent titles.

The project boasts an impressive lineup of executive producers, including Cannes Grand Prix winner Payal Kapadia, along with renowned filmmakers Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. The production is notable not only for its storytelling but also for its predominantly female crew, a move that director Tribeny Rai says helped shape the film’s deeply personal and observant lens.

Rana Daggubati praised the film for its “emotional honesty,” while Zoya Akhtar highlighted Rai’s “confident and clear” voice as a filmmaker. The release comes at a time when cinema from Northeast India is gaining unprecedented momentum on the global stage. By bringing this layered, contemporary story to mainstream audiences, the team hopes to expand the horizons of Indian cinema and prove that independent, rooted stories have a definitive place on the big screen.
