The teaser of Eetha, a biographical film starring Shraddha Kapoor, has recently been released, but the film has already sparked controversy over its title and representation of folk legend Vithabai Bhau Mang Narayangaonkar.
The film portrays the life of the renowned Marathi folk artist, with Shraddha Kapoor playing the lead role. The story highlights the struggles and achievements of Vithabai, who made significant contributions to Lavani, a traditional folk dance form, while also facing severe personal hardships, including financial struggles later in life.
However, objections have been raised by the artist’s family, including her son and grandson, who have expressed dissatisfaction with the title “Eetha.” They argue that a biopic based on Vithabai’s life should carry her actual name to properly honour her legacy and cultural contribution.
Concerns have also been voiced by members of the Nationalist Congress Party’s cultural wing, who questioned why the film does not directly use the name of the folk icon. They suggested that titles such as “Vitha” or “Vithabai” would have been more respectful and appropriate.
The teaser shows powerful moments from her life, including her performances on stage and personal struggles behind the curtains. The film also features actors Randeep Hooda and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in key roles. The film is scheduled for release on August 28.
The debate has added attention to the film ahead of its release, raising questions about artistic representation versus cultural sensitivity in biographical cinema.
